Monthly Hotel Feature: Amaroo Bangalow
A Ridge Above Bangalow
A mere minute’s drive from the heart of Bangalow and only ten minutes from Byron Bay, Amaroo enjoys a prime location within the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.
Despite its proximity to town, the property feels quietly removed. Positioned on a hinterland ridge, it overlooks regenerated rainforest, grazing land and rolling hills. The setting is both pastoral and refined.
The philosophy guiding Amaroo is clear. Add to the land and take as little as possible. Mike and Cathy acquired the property with a commitment to restoration. Working with local partners, they removed invasive species and reintroduced tens of thousands of native plants and trees. Native wildlife has since returned, creating a more balanced ecosystem.
Today the land honours its grazing history while continuing regeneration efforts. Black Angus cattle roam. Honey and eggs are farmed onsite. Partnerships with Bangalow Koalas and East Coast Bush Regeneration support ongoing ecological stewardship.
Sustainability is not an afterthought. Amaroo operates at 100 percent water independence and around 70 percent energy independence, relying on rainfall, spring creeks and solar power. Natural materials were used in construction to harmonise with the surrounding landscape.
This is luxury shaped by responsibility.
Arrival and Access
The Northern Rivers region is easily reached from Australia’s east coast capitals, and Amaroo’s location allows guests to transition quickly from travel to retreat.
With Crooked Compass by Air, arrival can be elevated further. Guests may travel by private aircraft into nearby regional airports before transferring a short distance into the hinterland. Helicopter transfers are also possible, offering scenic views across coastline and farmland before descending toward Bangalow’s rolling hills.
Private air removes unnecessary delays and preserves energy for what matters. Instead of navigating busy terminals and extended road transfers, guests arrive calm, present and ready to settle into the landscape.

Accommodation Designed for Intimacy
Balaka at Amaroo Bangalow is the inaugural accommodation and offers exclusive access to the property. Guests may select an individual cabin for a private escape or reserve the entire estate for shared use. Balaka accommodates up to eight adults, six children and two small pets, subject to application.
Three architecturally designed self-contained cabins sit along the ridge, each providing privacy within the broader property. Generous floor to ceiling windows frame views across Amaroo’s hillsides. Wood burning fireplaces create warmth in cooler months. French flax bed linens and waffle robes add tactile comfort. Bluestone bathrooms feature skylights and rain showers, while Mukti Organics hair and skin products reinforce the connection to natural wellness.
Each cabin includes a kitchenette, espresso machine, indoor breakfast table and private outdoor porch. Luxury finishes are balanced with simplicity.
The Loft offers a larger, split-level configuration positioned slightly apart from the cabins. With a full kitchen, two bathrooms, spacious living areas and floor to ceiling picture windows overlooking regenerated rainforest, it provides additional privacy and scale.
At the heart of the estate sits the Pavilion. Conceived as a gathering space, it reflects the owners’ love of bringing people together over food and conversation. A commercial grade kitchen supports culinary enthusiasts or private chefs. A fourteen-person indoor dining table anchors shared meals. Outside, a generous deck overlooks the heated plunge pool and hillside beyond.
A wood fired pizza oven, firepit seating, four burner barbecue and private outdoor shower create opportunities to gather, feast and unwind in the open air.
Every space at Amaroo feels considered and cohesive.
Daily Life in the Hinterland
Life at Amaroo unfolds without pressure. Guests can choose to do as much or as little as they wish.
Leisurely mornings begin beneath French flax linens. Coffee is brewed in the Pavilion while sunlight filters across the hills. Some may wander into Bangalow’s historic town centre for breakfast. Others remain onsite, taking advantage of the fully equipped kitchen and expansive dining areas.
Afternoons invite a slower pace. Cocktails by the private plunge pool. Lawn games and board games. Creek side picnics arranged in advance. A visit to Byron Bay’s beaches, just ten minutes away, before returning to the ridge as the light softens.
Wildlife sightings are common thanks to Amaroo’s extensive regeneration program. Koalas, wallabies, black cockatoos, platypus and water dragons inhabit the property. Guests are invited to observe and appreciate the ecosystem that continues to flourish.
As evening approaches, the Pavilion becomes the centre of gravity. Pizza ovens glow. Firepits draw chairs closer together. Outdoor showers beneath starlit skies reconnect guests to their surroundings.
Meals feel unhurried and often shaped by what is fresh locally, shared around long tables as evening light softens across the hills.
Experiences Close to Home
A stone’s throw from Bangalow’s town centre, Amaroo serves as an ideal home base to explore this historically rich, eclectic and laidback-luxe part of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.
Within a ten-minute drive, Byron Bay unfolds with its globally recognised beach culture and vibrant hospitality scene. Ballina, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads and Nimbin broaden the landscape further, offering diverse natural settings, coastal experiences and cultural character unique to this region.
During your stay, Amaroo provides a curated and comprehensive list of local contacts, sharing the places they value most across town and region. In Bangalow itself, boutiques and galleries such as Ninbella Art Gallery, ROWIE, Bisque Traders, Nouk, Assembly Label and Island Luxe reflect the town’s creative pulse. The Bangalow Farmers Markets, held every Saturday morning, offer farm-direct produce and an opportunity to meet the personalities who shape this community.
For those seeking movement or restoration, wellness options include Mukti Beauty Salon, Bangalow Pilates, Awakened Soul Yoga and remedial massage studios across Bangalow and Ballina.
Outdoor exploration sits close at hand. Cape Byron Lighthouse offers expansive coastal views. Minyon Falls and Nightcap National Park invite rainforest walks. Killen Falls provides a secluded swimming spot. The Pass and Suffolk Park Dog Beach cater to ocean lovers, while Zephyr Horses offers a different way to experience the hinterland landscape.
The cultural calendar brings further dimension, with events such as Blues Fest, Splendour in the Grass and Caper Byron Bay drawing visitors from across the country.
Dining is equally considered. Woods Bangalow, Butcher Baker Bangalow, Bangalow Hotel, Ciao Mate and You Beauty offer refined yet relaxed meals close to home. Cape Byron Distillery and Harvest Newrybar extend the region’s food and drink experiences beyond town.
Yet many guests find that the most meaningful moments unfold back on the ridge. Whether gathering in the Pavilion, hosting wedding celebrations, enjoying honeymoon seclusion or simply settling into the rhythm of the land, Amaroo offers both access to the region and a retreat from it.
Who It Suits
Amaroo Bangalow was conceived as a different kind of luxury getaway, where exclusivity and natural tranquillity are paramount and connection is gently restored. It suits couples seeking an intimate retreat, small groups gathering for meaningful time together, and friends overdue for reconnection away from the pace of everyday life.
